Menu prices continued to rise at a steady pace in January, while 12-month inflation turned negative for the first time in more than five years.

The Midwest region saw the strongest menu price growth in recent months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Menu prices increased at a 3.9 percent rate in the Midwest region during the last 12 months, well above the 3.1 percent menu price gain on the national level.

Wholesale food prices fell 1.8 percent in January, which represented the third consecutive monthly drop.  Despite the recent downticks, average wholesale food prices remained 3.5 percent above their year-ago level.

Individual commodity prices were mostly lower in January, but beef prices remained well above their year-ago levels.
